President's Message
After posting the opportunity last week, we have two volunteers to help with the review process for the Elk Rapids Scholarship fund. This fund, started by our club,
awards scholarships each year, but surprisingly, we've not had any Rotarians on the selection committee. So, thank you to Judy Matchett and Ed Boettcher for stepping forward.
Speaking of Serving...
Rotary is a service club, which both betters the world through our service, and allows us a way to serve, or give back, returning some of the blessings that have fallen to each of us. There are a number of ways to serve, but specifically here I want to address leadership roles. In addition to officers the club has several committee
heads who maintain vital facets of our operation, and often, alone, which is not good for a culture of teamwork, or for long-term stability. Therefore (if you were wondering where this was headed, here's the payoff), our club needs some motivated people to bolster our committee structure and take on some responsibility as leaders. This may, or may not, lead to something more. For now, we need some folks to step forward, try something that interests them, and see where it goes. My first suggestion would be to contact a committee chairperson directly and offer to help. Who knows, you might like it!
Board Meeting
At Tuesday's board meeting we were without a quorum, and limited in what we could therefore take action on, however we did agree to move forward on a few things. The April board meeting will also coincide with the first board meeting for our new 501C3 foundation. After that is documented we can move ahead with a bank account for the 501C3. Also discussed was looking into interest-bearing options for our checking accounts, because, as stewards of the funds we have, we have a responsibility to make the most of those funds. Thanks to Laura Savoie for handling that. The June Anniversary Celebration and budget for that was also discussed as planning for that continues.
Tom Stephenson -
Moving the Village Forward
Tom gave a great presentation Tuesday about the challenges the Village is facing in a number of areas, and the plans to address those, from leadership and staffing to interconnected sewer systems. I don't think anyone is surprised that Tom's digging in as he has, and that the outlook is good.
75th Year Anniversary Party
Plans are underway for a celebration of our club's 75th anniversary, tentatively set for June 9 at the Elk Rapids Marina in the evening. We're not yet ready to announce everything, but you might want to make sure your Hawaiian shirt still fits, dust off your flip flops, and look for a parrot to bring to the event! More to come as the plans are firmed up, but save the date. You only turn 75 once!
